The Project
According to PMI, "A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service."

A project is temporary in the sense that it has a definite start and definite end and it is not expected to last for ever. The project is a system of tasks that are planned and executed in order to achieve "the unique product or service" also referred to as "project deliverables".
As a project is an endeavor to create a 'unique' product or service, it is something that was never happened before not it is expected to happen again once the project deliverables are achieved.
When the project deliverables are achieved, the project is over and therefore the start and end of the project i.e. the project deliverables must be clearly defined. If the project deliverables are not clearly defined, then definitely the project will never be complete.

As a project is unique and temporary endeavor, it can not be entirely reusable, however some of the systems that make up the project and certainly the project deliverables and the processes and systems developed as a part of the project to achieve the project deliverables, may be reused.

This discussion of the definition of the poject leads to the following conclusions:

1. A project is a temporary set of processes carried out to achieve its deliverables and it must have a clear start and end.

2. The project deliverables must be sharply defined as vaguely defined deliverables my lead to a never ending ongoing process that exhausts the workers and system working on a project.

3. The project can not be entirely reusable. Therefore focus must be on achieving the project deliverables. The reuse of project deliverables and system must be done after completion of project. No optimization should be stressed during project execution for the sake of reuse only.

4. A project as an endeavor, requires great effort with proper planning and can not be achieved in a normal fashion in which routine work is carried out. A project is more like an organized efort than a one man show.

5. Project definition, planning, execution and achievement require special skills and the organized effort is to be handled by a managerial body with those special skills. This managerial body is also known as the Project Manager and the art of handling a project is called Project Management.
